I first came to Bloomington in 1991 to attend Indiana University on a
football scholarship. I was lucky enough to play for former head coach Bill
Mallory. I earned my master’s and medical degree from Indiana University. I met
and married my wife, Jeanette, on campus.
Following medical school, I completed a five-year general orthopedics
residency in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I finished my surgical training with a
one-year fellowship in spinal surgery at The Spine Institute of Arizona. I
worked with leaders in the field specializing in “minimally invasive” and
“motion-sparing” spinal surgery (e.g. disc replacement). These techniques
minimize muscle damage; allow for smaller incisions; shorter hospital stays;
quicker return to work; and help prevent “adjacent level degeneration”.
Diagnosis and treatment of pain can be very complex. Being up to date on the
current technology and techniques allows me to best treat your pain. Taking time
to understand you and how your pain affects your life is critical for
decision-making.
I strongly believe in a team-based approach. You should feel comfortable not
only with your surgeon, but the whole team. Our team includes nurses, medical
assistants, and therapists who take great pride in a personalized approach to
your clinic experience.
